Writing for the Eyes: Preaching and Visual Imagery in Seventeenth-Century Kyiv

Summary The article explores how two early modern Ukrainian preachers, Stefan Javors’kyj and Antonij Radyvylovs’kyj, adapt combine Neoplatonic philosophy, Aristotelian epistemology, the antique, Renaissance idea of poetry painting as sister arts to create pictorial texts that translate some material manifestations contemporary visual culture such emblem into written form; these images – both verbal help structure organize thought, what effects they might have on cognition. I will argue in their sermons, traditional concept ut pictura poesis often intersects with we may call creatio divina (as is so divine creation) an emphasis analogies tie God’s creation man. Just like God “painted” man existence preacher should make use pictures visualize moral spiritual truths he propounding his audience.
